Hurricane Impact on the Green Industry

Key Damage Estimates from GA:

  • Short-Term Plant Loss: Estimated at $314.15 million, this includes plants that were ready to be sold within the year of the hurricane’s landfall. The assessment was based on farm gate values from impacted counties, adjusted for inflation and the percentage of plant losses reported by nurseries and greenhouses.
  • Infrastructure Damage: Estimated at $51.12 million, this includes costs related to replacing or repairing greenhouses, as well as other production space and associated infrastructure. Damage to irrigation systems, equipment, and the need for additional labor were also factored into this estimate.
  • Long-Term Plant Loss: Estimated at $84.67 million, this loss primarily affects field nurseries, where the production timeline for trees and shrubs spans multiple years. Future losses over the next four to five years were projected, with higher losses assumed for older trees due to the lengthy production cycle.
